Abstract:
This is a bibliography of publications of the late Per-Olov Lowdin (28 October 1916 – 6 October 2000).
Keywords:
BibTeX, bibliography, kvantkemi, quantum chemistry
Author Comments:
############################################# ############################################# ## This bibliography is dedicated in fond ## ## memory of, and to, Per-Olov Lowdin: ## ## advisor, alpinist, friend, host, ## ## leader, linear algebraist, mentor, ## ## musician, role model, scientist, ## ## and teacher of a great many of us in ## ## his extended scientific family. ## ############################################# #############################################
Coverage is expected to be nearly complete for material published in books and journals. However, there are a large number of Uppsala and Florida technical reports for which BibTeX entries are not yet available.
At version 0.15, the year coverage looked like this:
1939 ( 1) 1960 ( 4) 1981 ( 12) 1940 ( 0) 1961 ( 2) 1982 ( 14) 1941 ( 0) 1962 ( 14) 1983 ( 13) 1942 ( 0) 1963 ( 12) 1984 ( 5) 1943 ( 0) 1964 ( 14) 1985 ( 12) 1944 ( 0) 1965 ( 13) 1986 ( 15) 1945 ( 0) 1966 ( 9) 1987 ( 12) 1946 ( 0) 1967 ( 9) 1988 ( 15) 1947 ( 2) 1968 ( 14) 1989 ( 16) 1948 ( 5) 1969 ( 7) 1990 ( 10) 1949 ( 1) 1970 ( 9) 1991 ( 18) 1950 ( 2) 1971 ( 9) 1992 ( 16) 1951 ( 7) 1972 ( 7) 1993 ( 8) 1952 ( 1) 1973 ( 6) 1994 ( 10) 1953 ( 3) 1974 ( 6) 1995 ( 11) 1954 ( 6) 1975 ( 6) 1996 ( 9) 1955 ( 7) 1976 ( 7) 1997 ( 8) 1956 ( 5) 1977 ( 10) 1998 ( 8) 1957 ( 2) 1978 ( 9) 1999 ( 6) 1958 ( 9) 1979 ( 2) 2000 ( 4) 1959 ( 6) 1980 ( 11) 19xx ( 10)

The necessary diaeresis on the letter ``o'' in the family name is omitted in this comment header for technical reasons. It is properly preserved in all text that can be typeset from the BibTeX entries. Unlike in German, it is not customary in Swedish to reduce this letter to oe when the diaeresis is unavailable. Nevertheless, English-language databases often make this reduction.
The two research groups which Per-Olov Lowdin founded, and then led for nearly forty years, have World-Wide Web sites at
http://www.kvac.uu.se/ (Uppsala) http://www.qtp.ufl.edu/ (Gainesville)
Per-Olov Lowdin was the ``propagator'' of a huge number of scientific exchanges, thanks to the Sanibel Conferences (which celebrated their 40th anniversary in March 2000), to the Summer Schools in Sweden and Norway, and to the Winter Schools in Florida. More than 5000 different scientists have participated in these conferences and schools.
His two home institutions, plus the University of Aarhus in Aarhus, Denmark, and the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA have enjoyed particularly close collaboration. It was at the latter that this bibliography was developed, using several different data sources; they are credited in bibsource values in the BibTeX entries.
English translations are provided for titles of articles written in French (1) and Swedish (10).
Data for this bibliography has been collected from several sources, credited in bibsource values in the BibTeX entries:
Compendex database (1970–1999) IEEE INSPEC database (1968–2000) MathSciNet database (1940–2000) MEDLINE database (1966–2000) OCLC ArticleFirst database (ca. 1990–2000) OCLC WorldCat database (ca. 1990–2000) Science Citation Index database (1980–2000) University of California MELVYL catalog U.S. Library of Congress Zentralblatt Math database (1931–2000) ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/ijqc.bib ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/jmathphys1980.bib ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/master.bib http://falcon.kvac.uu.se/swe/personal/PerOlovLowdinPub.html http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journalfinder.html nhfb-allref.bib (an unreleased bibliography of original papers)
The University of California MELVYL catalog has been particularly helpful for information about books, and for names, and CODEN and ISSN data, of periodicals; the people of the State of California are gratefully acknowledged for making it available on the Internet.
There are far too many errors in these sources, but by merging data from multiple databases, and using majority vote to eliminate discrepancies, many of the errors have been repaired.
Several tedious hours of searching physical journal issues at the University of Utah Marriott Library provided additional data (typically for issue numbers, months, and final page numbers), and corrections.
Despite these extensive efforts, at version 0.10 of 16-Dec-2000, 142 entries out of 430 still contain errors or missing values, as evidenced by paired queries in string values, or keys beginning with `xx'.
It is regrettably common for bibliographic databases to reduce full names to initials plus family names. The STRONG preference in this bibliography is to preserve author names EXACTLY as they appeared in the original publication. It is the job of bibliographic formatting software to later reduce names to initials, if the bibliography style requires it. The original bibliographic data retains the complete information.
In the chemistry and physics literature, it is common for reference lists in papers to omit article titles, and often, issue numbers, publication months, and final page numbers. This deplorable practice makes such published bibliographies utterly useless for bibliographic archiving and search, makes it harder for a human to find papers in bound volumes (there are journals that publish more than 20,000 pages annually in a single `volume'), and makes it all but impossible for the reader to relate a bibliography entry to a publication that the reader is familiar with: people remember words, not numbers! This bibliography file strives to provide COMPLETE publication information.
Similarly, it is common for reference lists to abbreviate journal names, sometimes to the point of unintelligibility. In the days when bibliographies were typed (and retyped) by hand on mechanical typewriters, such practices were perhaps understandable, however much one may deplore the laziness.
With computer representation of publication data in properly, and rigorously, marked-up bibliographic databases, happily, such practices can now be abandoned.
In this BibTeX file, most journal names are given with BibTeX string abbreviations that are defined to expand to FULL journal names.
The journal abbreviation name begins with `j-' (for journal), followed by the uppercase equivalent of a common journal abbreviation, with punctuation eliminated.
Thus, j-ADV-CHEM-PHYS represents the journal ``Advances in Chemical Physics'', abbreviated as ``Adv. Chem. Phys.''.
Notice that a human possessing only the abbreviation might reasonably, but wrongly, guess that it represents ``Advances in Chemistry and Physics'', or ``Adventures in Chemical Physiology''!
Despite popular beliefs of researchers, there are no universal standards for abbreviating journal names: several professional societies and publishers produce such abbreviation lists, but there is widespread disagreement among them.
Where journal values in BibTeX entries remain in this file as quoted strings, rather than as BibTeX string names, sufficient library catalog information has yet to be found to uniquely identify the journal, and obtain its Chemical Abstracts serial publication identifier (the CODEN), and the International Standard Serial Number (the ISSN). The latter have been assigned since 1972 to virtually all periodicals regularly published throughout the world, and as such, provide a unique periodical identifier for databases and library catalogs.
